to take houseEdit

Bonjour,

Note the special use of 'take' meaning 'to win' or 'to capture' in a competition or battle.

Examples: the athlete took the gold medal in the Olympic pentathlon.
The soldiers took the bridge after a long battle.

In the political sense there is often a battle (the campaign) and a competition (the election).
